‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from injury table to scoring with Athletic

Thehe initial occasion the Athletic striker featured in English soil, an young playing for the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in September 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he played in the country, against Sunderland weeks after, he converted. His third outing, against the Citizens not long later, well, he scored again. When he returned to Manchester to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, also. “Truly,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did their duty: they took him off.

“I got well angry,” the forward reveals, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the latter period: I was without a signed my contract, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain the validity, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”

At Lezama, the Basque Country, the early training is set to begin; post-session, the quick travel to the airport and another flight to Britain, now to take on the Magpies in the UCL on Wednesday. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a tough year for Athletic, due in part to the demands of their participation. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. But, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.

In the three years since he had returned to the club, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching the showpiece event by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway flanked by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.

He considered it difficult enough just to earn a spot and he was right. The son of the ex-La Real star Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that developed the coach, the former star and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he experienced a serious knee problem, being released, a relegation and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of their lives.

“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you progress through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I suffered the ACL injury.

“A massive setback but I reflect on it as something positive because it shifted the perspective. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it helps. You adopt practices you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then return home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Strength training. With hip imbalance, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.

“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles 200,000 times. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved emotionally in that year, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he got three strikes in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and should the time come the requirement appears for your role, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. All the more so after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
