Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The economist declared he would withdraw from public positions after legislative body released his frequent communications with the financier

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

The economist stated in a release that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the organization, and anticipate following their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who once headed the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public emails showed that Summers corresponded with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it respected Summers' determination to resign.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the insight he provided to the governing body," the company commented.

Political Context

This development follows after the two houses of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Epstein.

The bill will then head to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has stated he expects to sign the measure, after modifying his view on the matter following objections from his followers.

Email Contents

A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee recently included multiple high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.

The messages revealed that the professor and Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to connect the academic to notable world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the emails were made available with the wider community, the former official said he assumed "total ownership for my poor choice to persist in interacting with the financier".

He continued that he desired "to restore trust and mend connections with the individuals nearest to me".

Professional History

Summers occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; acting as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He led the university from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his departure from public commitments earlier on Monday, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following his declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a liberal policy institute in DC where the professor was a prominent member, verified that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the group.

He became part of the directorate of the AI company, which creates the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to remove its chief executive Sam Altman.
