Individuals who endured sexual abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope after their first meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's choice to engage with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Approach Pushed

The organization is advocating for a worldwide strict approach that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is proven of abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is resistance," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The new Pope, who assumed the role in May, has inherited this longstanding issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an unprecedented summit on child abuse within the Church and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Link

For the representative, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the measure is deeply meaningful. The North American activist revealed they were victimized by a clergy member who was subsequently moved between various churches.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to collaborate with him," Hickey stated. "Both sides share the common objective, we seek to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Historic Meeting

Seven representatives of the coalition, which represents survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, met with the Pope in his official residence.

The meeting, originally scheduled for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

Hickey noted the leader was "tender" about their own story and seemed "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," they commented. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and very open and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is hoping that revisions to church regulations will facilitate the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and compiled documents that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," they noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recently released Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The report also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and major superiors to be held accountable for negligence and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey revealed they told the pontiff at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, Hickey voiced optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a connection and persisting to strengthen that bond is a step in the right direction," they commented.

They concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a difficult period, I believe like we can alter how the story ends - he valued that."
