The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
